Concord was all cultural vitality in a pastoral “good place” for writing and gardening and marriage.Ĭast innocently out of their rented Eden, he and Sophia had to move in with his mother in Salem. There in Concord, in the midst of the Transcendentalist Movement, he wrote as part of the literary avant-garde, in the company of Emerson, Margaret Fuller, Lowell, Channing, Bronson Alcott and the scruffy Thoreau. “The Old Manse” is nostalgic for the bliss of his honeymoon, is the “brightest” of his works and is his most idealistic expression of Christian Platonism. ![]() As put by biographer Randall Stewart, “The life of the newly married pair at the Old Manse is the classic of American marital idylls.” It lasted until the fall of 1845, when the son of the late clergyman who owned the house decided to take it over himself. Hawthorne married Sophia in July 1842, they moved into the Old Manse and he began cultivating the garden, which he compared to Eden. Though balance implies equal weight, Hawthorne viewed life and history as brightening, in contrast to Melville, who saw the dark side as “two thirds” of life, corresponding to the ratio of sea to land on earth: “So, therefore, that mortal man who hath more of joy than sorrow in him, that mortal man cannot be true-not true, or undeveloped”-like Jolly Stubb (Moby-Dick, Chapter 96). A subtle artist rather than a preacher, he dramatizes his spiritual ideals and moral judgments in the context of history, exposing “pernicious errors.” He gave his sensitive wife Sophia headaches when he read aloud to her from the manuscript about poor Hester Prynne, which he himself felt was “too much ungladdened by genial sunshine.” He considered his domestic Victorian romance The House of the Seven Gables more characteristic of his “mind and heart.” Hawthorne transcended himself in writing The Scarlet Letter, rendering the gloom in human life and history that was required to balance the brightness more characteristic of his own nature. ![]() ![]() The self he includes is a modest “figurative self,” for he keeps “the inmost Me behind its veil.” Unlike the Calvinist Parson Hooper, whose veil is all gloomy black, the Victorian idealist Hawthorne is “a man not estranged from human life, yet enveloped in the midst of it with a veil woven of intermingled gloom and brightness.” That is his description of a clergyman fit to live in the Old Manse, the legendary national monument in Concord that was his home for awhile, in the first paragraph of “The Old Manse” (1846). “The Custom-House” Hawthorne’s allegories are evidence of holistic consciousness, which impels him to include himself as author in any vision of totality. It's a standalone router that gives users access to the new 6 GHz band, which increases the number of WiFi devices the router can handle and gives those who own phones and other gadgets that have 6 GHz capability an alternative to the overcrowded 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. The Archer AXE5400, also known as Archer AXE75, is a WiFi 6E router than can deliver speeds of up to 5400 Mbps. TP-Link has introduced two new WiFi 6 routers that use tri-band technology, which translates to more bandwidth for multiple devices and less congestion. Which, for GH3 was pretty much unacceptable (luckily I had another method-routing the video from XBox360 into my monitor directly using DVI input). I did this with my TV tuner and found that it had maybe 100ms lag or something like that (don't recall exactly). In this case the notes and music can line up just fine, but the note hit/miss effect will still necessarily be delayed, which can still cause minor issues.Īs a side note, you can actually use the lag calibration feature of GH3/Rock band to get a -rough- estimate of the lag introduced by your system. Guitar hero does have lag calibration, and nowadays they have separate calibration for audio and video, which is even better, but there is no way to eliminate the effects of lag. Of course games like guitar hero are another story completely. Back when I was playing SSBM I could distinctly notice lag on other systems, since I was a fox main and was used to wavedash input sequences which were 4 or 5 frames long. But it doesn't matter, as long as I have no lag. I think it even is starting to have problems with the contacts that make the image fuzzy toward the bottom for the first minute or so until it warms up. I always find it funny how everytime I play console games I feel most safe using the cheapest and oldest TV in the house. ![]() It would be interesting to test various Tetris setups with your microphone setup. ![]() I suppose the best way to determine if audio is causing a perception of lag is to turn the audio off and see if the game still feels laggy. Somehow I would think it wouldn't make as big of a difference, though. Still, it can definitely contribute a sense of lagginess in a game for sure. Tepples, audio lag is a whole different subject. Perhaps if someone could make a program that displays something when given a configurable input and for certain has absolutely no lag, then lag for various input methods could be tested with a 60fps video camera in much the same way. This would be an interesting thing to test, however. Perhaps it's a SLI specific issue? USB in general seems to not have much lag. I would really be interested in finding a program like mouserate that would work for USB HID joysticks as well.Īlso, I've never seen the USB lag that the poster in the comments section noticed. My Logitech G3 polls at 500Hz, for example, while the wireless mouse from my Logitech Cordless Confort Duo only polls at 60Hz, probably to save battery life. There are various utilities to change this rate out there, but some mice poll faster by default as well. Otherwise, they function similarly: you move the mouse around quickly and the program tells you the polling rate. The first measures without using DirectX, and the second measures using DirectInput. To measure USB polling rate, herc, there are two programs out there: mouserate.exe, and dx_mouse_timer_dialog.exe. I can see how this method would be very useful for things that always run at a fixed FPS, like Tetris games and emulators. Still, measuring with a 60fps video can still give good information, especially if you set the PC's refresh rate to 60Hz. (Not that I'm sure why consoles need to make this decision either, for that matter.) Generally PCs use as high of a framerate as possible up to the refresh rate. For instance, I don't think that PCs need to decide on 60fps or 30fps, for example. One think I'm not sure about is how applicable the methods that cause lag are to PCs compared to consoles. The difference between the two times is the lag difference between the two displays, and since we assume the CRT has little to no lag, the difference is the lag of the other device.Īlso, there was another article from the same person about the causes of controller lag in games, which was also an interesting read: Then, take a picture of both displays while a stopwatch program is running on the screens. If you need to find your display device's input lag, the standard technique is to set a computer to clone mode with a CRT and the display in question. Using a CRT monitor or TV to do this would be the best. One important note is to make sure you're using a display device with as little lag as possible, so as not to add any extra lag to the results. Perhaps we can compete to see who can find the Tetris setup on the PC with the lowest lag? I'd be curious to see anyone else's results as well. ![]() I KNOW my MAME setup has terrible lag on TAP ever since I used Texmaster and felt the lack of lag in that game. But I think this is an ingenious solution to actually figuring out how much lag a game actually has, and I intend to try it out on a number of different Tetris games when I get the camera back. Well, I have one of these cameras, but my wife has it and is away until the middle of next week. So I was reading Gamasutra the other day and stumbled across an interesting article about measuring controller lag using the 60fps video mode on a digital camera: ![]()
Since audio is being routed through MainStage now, I can use the faders to control volume.īe aware that this method, while the best option by far, isn’t completely foolproof. Notice my expression dials are all at 127 now. The latest version of Soundflower (that works with MacOS Sierra) can be downloaded here.Īfter installing Soundflower, navigate to System Preferences/Audio. Since ADAT is a completely digital connection, there won’t be any latency penalties from AD and DA conversions. ADAT LoopbackĪudio interfaces with ADAT I/O can also be used for near-zero latency loopback. Audio interfaces from RME, MOTU (AVB), and iConnectivity support this feature. Higher end audio interfaces will often have loopback capability in their respective software mixers. Similar to the IAC Driver, Soundflower lets you route up to 64 channels of audio between applications. Soundflower is an OS X kernel extension that adds a “virtual audio interface” to your computer. Similar to the MIDI loopback, there are a few solutions. Thus, the solution is to route the audio from Kontakt to MainStage. It doesn’t allow for effects processing inside MainStage because audio is being routed from Kontakt straight to your sound card or audio interface. ![]() Instead, I’ve used the expression dials to mix the patch. Hardware LoopĪs you may have noticed, these MIDI output assignments correspond directly to Kontakt’s MIDI input settings.īe aware that moving the volume faders will have no effect because audio doesn’t originate from MainStage in this setup. MacOS ships with IAC (Inter-Application Communication) Driver, a virtual MIDI interface that enables transmission of MIDI data between different pieces of software. There are two ways to do this - software and hardware. The first task is to figure out how to send MIDI data from MainStage to Kontakt. However, external instrument channel strips can also be used to control software - the Kontakt standalone application. ![]() In MainStage, external instrument channel strips are used to control tone generators outside of MainStage - often hardware synthesizers. With that said, I have to assume this was a MainStage/Kontakt compatibility issue because the dozens of instances of Keyscape and Omnisphere in the same concert worked flawlessly. Fortunately, the horns ended up getting cut in a new orchestration. This resulted in laggy patch changes (the longest change took a full five seconds) and occasional audio glitches. On a recent show, I decided to use a few Session Horns presets in a multitimbral setup. In the screenshot above, you can see Channel 1 is set to 127, Channel 2 is set to 100, and Channel 3 is set to 60.Even with proper programming technique, performance issues can still arise when using multitimbral instances of Kontakt in MainStage. A workaround is to use the expression dial at the top of the channel strip to balance volume. Thus, moving the volume fader on the alias for Channel 1 will have the same effect on Channel 3. ![]() Multiple aliases of the channel strip located within one patch are globally affected by the volume fader. In other words, the left-most alias is Channel 1, the middle alias is Channel 2, and the right-most alias is Channel 3. For example, I always use ascending MIDI channels from left to right. Stay organized by sticking to a single protocol and workflow. This means it’s not possible to give different names to the channel strips in the above screenshot. Works with the NI Kontakt v6.7.Keep in mind a channel strip’s name and color apply to all aliases. – Choose from a selection of chord progressions or play your own melodies – 222 strummed and picked patterns spanning a range of genres – The signature sound of a solid-body electric guitar with 3 combinable single coil pickups Whether you’re spinning silky licks and soulful grooves, tearing it up with a roaring solo, or sitting in the pocket with popping funk lines, ELECTRIC MINT delivers timeless tones to the freshest productions, with patterns and built-in MIDI chord progressions for any style packed into one playable instrument. Luminar 4 takes, on my gaming PC, 6 seconds or more to switch from browse mode to edit mode.ĭxO has a far more industrial feel to it than Luminar – look at their respective interfaces below.ĭxO responds quickly when you change a setting, and many of its presets are right for most images. Switching to Customise mode, to edit an image, is fast. You can use it for basic image management, but it is not a full-blown Digital Asset Management tool (what is?) and it’s not my tool of choice for this. Photo Lab 4 features a decent image browser. I can’t remember the last time I had to shut it down and restart it. Luminar is great at what it does, but DxO is so much faster and stable in use. I wish I could say the same for one of its major rivals, Luminar 4. It’s a nice to have feature but I usually do this when exporting images for Web use from Exposure X6.ĭxO Photo Lab is a mature product, and it shows. You can also watermark your images in DxO. I use Advanced, adjust it to suit my needs, and then save it as my workspace. It comes with three built in ‘Workspaces’ (layouts) – Standard, Advanced and What’s New? The What’s New? Workspace is great for experienced users wanting to get to grips with the additional features. Other EnhancementsĭxO have tweaked the UI to make it easier to use. You copy the settings from one image and then paste some of them to other images. Most RAW converters, including DxO, can create presets from the current development settings. This isn’t unique to DxO (Photo Ninja has it too) but it is a highly desirable feature. The history panel doesn’t let you reorder the adjustments, so if you want to undo a change other than the last one, go back to the adjustment panels. Using this history panel is far better than using CTRL + Z and hoping to step back to the ‘right’ place. Second, you can intelligently undo the adjustments. First, it lets you see at a glance which adjustments you’ve applied to an image. I used Topaz tools as part of my post processing workflow, so its ability to outperform DxO in this area was amazing.īut DxO are right back in the game with their new DeepPrime Noise Reduction, as my tests below show. Noise reduction is best done early on – during the RAW development stage, where the RAW converter has the enormous advantage of dealing with the RAW image data, unaffected by editing. But the others caught up and then, amazingly, Topaz Labs AI Clear and DeNoise AI bettered it. It produced better, sharper and cleaner images than anything else. When I first used DxO, many years ago, its noise reduction and core RAW development engine were class leading. Not all of these extra features are show-stoppers or even unique, but some really caught my eye: DxO DeepPrime Instant watermarking: to add watermarks directly to your photos.Selective Copy Paste: to synchronise the settings of several similar images by applying individual edits from one photo to another.DxO Advanced History: a new and exclusive editing history tool to scroll back to different moments in the editing process.DxO Smart Workspace: a new dynamic interface with a simpler workflow with batch renaming. ![]() DxO DeepPrime: a revolutionary demosaicing and denoising technology based on artificial intelligence and trained with deep learning. This feature helps you restore a natural look to your landscape, architectural, and urban photos.DxO kindly provided me with a pre-release of Photo Lab V4 and this time I am much more impressed.
